COLUMBIA, S.C. – John J. Hearn, a shareholder of Rogers Townsend and Thomas, PC, has been elected chair of the South Carolina Bar Consumer Law Section Council.

The section’s goal is promoting understanding among Bar members and the public about consumer law issues. The section sponsors continuing legal education seminars and contributes articles for publication in South Carolina Lawyer. The section also works with the Department of Consumer Affairs and Legal Services on issues affecting debtors and creditors and monitors proposed legislation.

Hearn has served on the section council for four years, most recently as chair-elect. He’s currently chair-elect for the Richland County Bar Association, and he’ll become chair of that organization in December.

Hearn also is a volunteer Attorney to Assist for the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, as well as a mentor for the South Carolina Bar’s Lawyers Helping Lawyers program. Additionally, Hearn is a member of Rogers, Townsend & Thomas’ Professional Development Committee.

Hearn is part of RTT’s Litigation Department, where he focuses on resolution of title insurance claims, contested foreclosure matters and property tax sale disputes. He travels the state defending claims against lenders and manages a team of lawyers who concentrate on those claims. Additionally, he manages a variety of business litigation matters.

He holds a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the University of South Carolina, where he attended the South Carolina Honors College, and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
